42866e566a cmd/compile: minor cleanup to HashDebugPos
HashDebugPos function/method included a parameter that was always
the same, and a variable in the same package as the hashdebug code.
So remove it.

(I wrote that code, there was no reason for it to be that way).

Also corrects a stale comment in the loopvar code.

7a21f799a5 cmd/compile: add -url flag, print URL with error messages if applicable
If the -url flag is provided, when encountering a type checking error,
the compiler will also print a URL to a more detailed description of
the error and an example, if available.

Example uses:

        go tool compile -url filename.go
        go build -gcflags=-url pkg/path

For instance, a duplicate declaration of an identifier will report

        https://pkg.go.dev/internal/types/errors#DuplicateDecl

We may refine the provided URL over time.

269bdcd568 cmd/compile: remove -wrapglobalmapinit flag
Remove the compiler's "-wrapglobalmapinit" flag; it is potentially
confusing for users and isn't appropriate as a top level flag. Move
the enable/disable control to the "wrapglobalmapctl" debug flag
(values: 0 on by default, 1 disabled, 2 stress mode). No other changes
to compiler functionality.

c20d959163 cmd/compile: experimental loop iterator capture semantics change
Adds:
GOEXPERIMENT=loopvar (expected way of invoking)
-d=loopvar={-1,0,1,2,11,12} (for per-package control and/or logging)
-d=loopvarhash=... (for hash debugging)

loopvar=11,12 are for testing, benchmarking, and debugging.

If enabled,for loops of the form `for x,y := range thing`, if x and/or
y are addressed or captured by a closure, are transformed by renaming
x/y to a temporary and prepending an assignment to the body of the
loop x := tmp_x. This changes the loop semantics by making each
iteration's instance of x be distinct from the others (currently they
are all aliased, and when this matters, it is almost always a bug).

3-range with captured iteration variables are also transformed,
though it is a more complex transformation.

"Optimized" to do a simpler transformation for
3-clause for where the increment is empty.

(Prior optimization of address-taking under Return disabled, because
it was incorrect; returns can have loops for children. Restored in
a later CL.)

Includes support for -d=loopvarhash=<binary string> intended for use
with hash search and GOCOMPILEDEBUG=loopvarhash=<binary string>
(use `gossahash -e loopvarhash command-that-fails`).

Minor feature upgrades to hash-triggered features; clients can specify
that file-position hashes use only the most-inline position, and/or that
they use only the basenames of source files (not the full directory path).
Most-inlined is the right choice for debugging loop-iteration change
once the semantics are linked to the package across inlining; basename-only
makes it tractable to write tests (which, otherwise, depend on the full
pathname of the source file and thus vary).

Updates #57969.

b46e44a399 cmd/compile: enable deadcode of unreferenced large global maps
This patch changes the compiler's pkg init machinery to pick out large
initialization assignments to global maps (e.g.

   var mymap = map[string]int{"foo":1, "bar":2, ... }

and extract the map init code into a separate outlined function, which is
then called from the main init function with a weak relocation:

   var mymap map[string]int   // KEEP reloc -> map.init.0

   func init() {
      map.init.0() // weak relocation
   }

   func map.init.0() {
     mymap = map[string]int{"foo":1, "bar":2}
   }

The map init outlining is done selectively (only in the case where the
RHS code exceeds a size limit of 20 IR nodes).

In order to ensure that a given map.init.NNN function is included when
its corresponding map is live, we add dummy R_KEEP relocation from the
map variable to the map init function.

This first patch includes the main compiler compiler changes, and with
the weak relocation addition disabled. Subsequent patch includes the
requred linker changes along with switching to the call to the
outlined routine to a weak relocation. See the later linker change for
associated compile time performance numbers.

8fd2875c3e go/types, types2: make the new comparable semantics the default
Ordinary interface types now satisfy comparable constraints. This
is a fully backward-compatible change: it simply permits additional
code to be valid that wasn't valid before.

This change makes the new comparable semantics the default behavior,
depending on the Go -lang version.

It also renames the flag types2.Config.AltComparableSemantics to
types2.Config.OldComparableSemantics and inverts its meaning
(or types.Config.oldComparableSemantics respectively).

Add new predicate Satisfies (matching the predicate Implements but
for constraint satisfaction), per the proposal description.

Adjust some existing tests by setting -oldComparableSemantics
and add some new tests that verify version-dependent behavior.

The compiler flag -oldcomparable may be used to temporarily
switch back to the Go 1.18/1.19 behavior should this change
cause problems, or to identify that a problem is unrelated
to this change. The flag will be removed for Go 1.21.

f89b39c0af cmd/compile: reenable inlstaticinit
This was disabled in CL 452676 out of an abundance of caution,
but further analysis has shown that the failures were not being
caused by this optimization. Instead the sequence of commits was:

CL 450136 cmd/compile: handle simple inlined calls in staticinit
...
CL 449937 archive/tar, archive/zip: return ErrInsecurePath for unsafe paths
...
CL 451555 cmd/compile: fix static init for inlined calls

The failures in question became compile failures in the first CL
and started building again after the last CL.
But in the interim the code had been broken by the middle CL.
CL 451555 was just the first time that the tests could run and fail.

For #30820.

152119990f cmd/compile: add -d=inlstaticinit debug flag
This CL adds -d=inlstaticinit to control whether static initialization
of inlined function calls (added in CL 450136) is allowed.

We've needed to fix it once already (CL 451555) and Google-internal
testing is hitting additional failure cases, so putting this
optimization behind a feature flag seems appropriate regardless.

Also, while we diagnose and fix the remaining cases, this CL also
disables the optimization to avoid miscompilations.

b1678e508b cmd/compile: handle simple inlined calls in staticinit
Global variable initializers like

	var myErr error = &myError{"msg"}

have been converted to statically initialized data
from the earliest days of Go: there is no init-time
execution or allocation for that line of code.

But if the expression is moved into an inlinable function,
the static initialization no longer happens.
That is, this code has always executed and allocated
at init time, even after we added inlining to the compiler,
which should in theory make this code equivalent to
the original:

	func NewError(s string) error { return &myError{s} }
	var myErr2 = NewError("msg")

This CL makes the static initialization rewriter understand
inlined functions consisting of a single return statement,
like in this example, so that myErr2 can be implemented as
statically initialized data too, just like myErr, with no init-time
execution or allocation.

A real example of code that benefits from this rewrite is
all globally declared errors created with errors.New, like

	package io
	var EOF = errors.New("EOF")

Package io no longer has to allocate and initialize EOF each
time a program starts.

Another example of code that benefits is any globally declared
godebug setting (using the API from CL 449504), like

	package http
	var http2server = godebug.New("http2server")

These are no longer allocated and initialized at program startup either.

The list of functions that are inlined into static initializers when
compiling std and cmd (along with how many times each occurs) is:

	cmd/compile/internal/ssa.StringToAux (3)
	cmd/compile/internal/walk.mkmapnames (4)
	errors.New (360)
	go/ast.NewIdent (1)
	go/constant.MakeBool (4)
	go/constant.MakeInt64 (3)
	image.NewUniform (4)
	image/color.ModelFunc (11)
	internal/godebug.New (12)
	vendor/golang.org/x/text/unicode/bidi.newBidiTrie (1)
	vendor/golang.org/x/text/unicode/norm.newNfcTrie (1)
	vendor/golang.org/x/text/unicode/norm.newNfkcTrie (1)

For the cmd/go binary, this CL cuts the number of init-time
allocations from about 1920 to about 1620 (a 15% reduction).

The total executable code footprint of init functions is reduced
by 24kB, from 137kB to 113kB (an 18% reduction).
The overall binary size is reduced by 45kB,
from 15.335MB to 15.290MB (a 0.3% reduction).
(The binary size savings is larger than the executable code savings
because every byte of executable code also requires corresponding
runtime tables for unwinding, source-line mapping, and so on.)

Also merge test/sinit_run.go, which had stopped testing anything
at all as of CL 161337 (Feb 2019) and initempty.go into a new test
noinit.go.

Fixes #30820.

667c53e159 cmd/compile: add debug-hash flag for fused-multiply-add
This adds a -d debug flag "fmahash" for hashcode search for
floating point architecture-dependent problems. This variable has no
effect on architectures w/o fused-multiply-add.

This was rebased onto the GOSSAHASH renovation so that this could have
its own dedicated environment variable, and so that it would be
cheap (a nil check) to check it in the normal case.

Includes a basic test of the trigger plumbing.

Sample use (on arm64, ppc64le, s390x):

% GOCOMPILEDEBUG=fmahash=001110110 \
  go build -o foo cmd/compile/internal/ssa/testdata/fma.go
fmahash triggered main.main:24 101111101101111001110110

exit status 1

The intended use is in conjunction with github.com/dr2chase/gossahash,
which will probably acquire a flag "-fma" to streamline its use. This
tool+use was inspired by an ad hoc use of this technique "in anger"
to debug this very problem. This is also a dry-run for using this
same technique to identify code sensitive to loop variable
lifetime/capture, should we make that change.

Example intended use, with current search tool (using old environment
variable), for a test example:

Randomized feature enable/disable might be something we use to
help users debug any problems with changed loop variable capture,
and there's another CL that would like to use it to help in
locating places where "fused" multiply add instructions change
program behavior.

This CL:
- adds the ability to include an integer parameter (e.g. line number)
- replumbed the environment variable into a flag to simplify go build cache management
- but added an environment variable to allow flag setting through the environment
- which adds the possibility of switching on a different variable
(if there's one built-in for variable capture, it shouldn't be GOSSAHASH)
- cleaned up the checking code
- adds tests for all the intended behavior
- removes the case for GSHS_LOGFILE; TBD whether we'll need to put that back
or if there is another way.

8bd803fd4e cmd/internal/sys: migrate support.go functions to new internal pkg
Separate out the functions from cmd/internal/sys/support.go and
migrate them to a new package internal/platform, so that functions such as
"RaceDetectorSupported" can be called from tests in std as well as in
cmd. This isn't a complete move of everything in cmd/internal/sys;
there are still many functions left.

The original version of this CL (patch set 1) called the new package
"internal/sys", but for packages that needed both "internal/sys" and
"cmd/internal/sys" the import of the former had to be done with a
different name, which was confusing and also required a hack in
cmd/dist.

e6d9057e2f cmd/compile: add coverage fixup mode
Adds a -coveragecfg=<configfile> command line option to the compiler
to help support a cooperative "tool and compiler" mode for coverage
instrumentation. In this mode the cmd/cover tool generates most of the
counter instrumentation via source-to-source rewriting, but the
compiler fixes up the result if passed the "-coveragecfg" option. The
fixups include:

  - reclassifying counter variables (special storage class)
  - marking meta-data variables are read-only
  - adding in an init call to do registation

9058080319 cmd/compile: clarify help message for -L flag
The file names reported in error messages by the compiler are
printed unchanged from the file names provided to the compiler;
the -L flag has no impact on the file names themselves, contrary
to what the old flag description suggested.

If an error is reported on a line that is affected by a //line
directive, an error message reports the file name and line as
controlled by the directive (i.e., the actual source position
is not known).

If the -L flag is provided, the actual source position is also
reported in square brackets.

This change documents this with an updated help string for the
flag.

e853464055 cmd/compile, cmd/link: produce unlinkable object when compile without -p
CL 391014 requires the compiler to be invoked with the -p flag, to
specify the package path. People are used to run "go tool compile"
from the command line with the -p flag. This is mostly for simple
testing, or debugging the compiler. The produced object file is
almost never intended to be linked.

This CL makes the compiler allow "go tool compile" without the -p
flag again. It will produce an unlinkable object. If the linker
sees such an object it will error out.

a987aaf5f7 cmd/compile: require -p flag
The -p flag specifies the import path of the package being compiled.
This CL makes it required when invoking the compiler and
adjusts tests that invoke the compiler directly to conform to this
new requirement. The go command already passes the flag, so it
is unmodified in this CL. It is expected that any other Go build systems
also already pass -p, or else they will need to arrange to do so before
updating to Go 1.19. Of particular note, Bazel already does for rules
with an importpath= attribute, which includes all Gazelle-generated rules.

There is more cleanup possible now in cmd/compile, cmd/link,
and other consumers of Go object files, but that is left to future CLs.

Additional historical background follows but can be ignored.

Long ago, before the go command, or modules, or any kind of
versioning, symbols in Go archive files were named using just the
package name, so that for example func F in math/rand and func F in
crypto/rand would both be the object file symbol 'rand.F'. This led to
collisions even in small source trees, which made certain packages
unusable in the presence of other packages and generally was a problem
for Go's goal of scaling to very large source trees.

Fixing this problem required changing from package names to import
paths in symbol names, which was mostly straightforward. One wrinkle,
though, is that the compiler did not know the import path of the
package being compiled; it only knew the package name. At the time,
there was no go command, just Makefiles that people had invoking 6g
(now “go tool compile”) and then copying the resulting object file to
an importable location. That is, everyone had a custom build setup for
Go, because there was no standard one. So it was not particularly
attractive to change how the compiler was invoked, since that would
break approximately every Go user at the time. Instead, we arranged
for the compiler to emit, and other tools reading object files to
recognize, a special import path (the empty string, it turned out)
denoting “the import path of this object file”. This worked well
enough at the time and maintained complete command-line compatibility
with existing Go usage.

The changes implementing this transition can be found by searching
the Git history for “package global name space”, which is what they
eliminated. In particular, CL 190076 (a6736fa4), CL 186263 (758f2bc5),
CL 193080 (1cecac81), CL 194053 (19126320), and CL 194071 (531e6b77)
did the bulk of this transformation in January 2010.

Later, in September 2011, we added the -p flag to the compiler for
diagnostic purposes. The problem was that it was easy to create import
cycles, especially in tests, and these could not be diagnosed until
link time. You'd really want the compiler to diagnose these, for
example if the compilation of package sort noticed it was importing a
package that itself imported "sort". But the compilation of package
sort didn't know its own import path, and so it could not tell whether
it had found itself as a transitive dependency. Adding the -p flag
solved this problem, and its use was optional, since the linker would
still diagnose the import cycle in builds that had not updated to
start passing -p. This was CL 4972057 (1e480cd1).

There was still no go command at this point, but when we introduced
the go command we made it pass -p, which it has for many years at this
point.

Over time, parts of the compiler began to depend on the presence of
the -p flag for various reasonable purposes. For example:

In CL 6497074 (041fc8bf; Oct 2012), the race detector used -p to
detect packages that should not have race annotations, such as
runtime/race and sync/atomic.

In CL 13367052 (7276c02b; Sep 2013), a bug fix used -p to detect the
compilation of package reflect.

In CL 30539 (8aadcc55; Oct 2016), the compiler started using -p to
identify package math, to be able to intrinsify calls to Sqrt inside
that package.

In CL 61019 (9daee931; Sep 2017), CL 71430 (2c1d2e06; Oct 2017), and
later related CLs, the compiler started using the -p value when
creating various DWARF debugging information.

In CL 174657 (cc5eaf93; May 2019), the compiler started writing
symbols without the magic empty string whenever -p was used, to reduce
the amount of work required in the linker.

In CL 179861 (dde7c770; Jun 2019), the compiler made the second
argument to //go:linkname optional when -p is used, because in that
case the compiler can derive an appropriate default.

There are more examples. Today it is impossible to compile the Go
standard library without using -p, and DWARF debug information is
incomplete without using -p.

All known Go build systems pass -p. In particular, the go command
does, which is what nearly all Go developers invoke to build Go code.
And Bazel does, for go_library rules that set the importpath
attribute, which is all rules generated by Gazelle.

Gccgo has an equivalent of -p and has required its use in order to
disambiguate packages with the same name but different import paths
since 2010.

On top of all this, various parts of code generation for generics
are made more complicated by needing to cope with the case where -p
is not specified, even though it's essentially always specified.

In summary, the current state is:

 - Use of the -p flag with cmd/compile is required for building
the standard library, and for complete DWARF information,
and to enable certain linker speedups.

 - The go command and Bazel, which we expect account for just
about 100% of Go builds, both invoke cmd/compile with -p.

 - The code in cmd/compile to support builds without -p is
complex and has become more complex with generics, but it is
almost always dead code and therefore not worth maintaining.

 - Gccgo already requires its equivalent of -p in any build
where two packages have the same name.

All this supports the change in this CL, which makes -p required
and adjusts tests that invoke cmd/compile to add -p appropriately.

Future CLs will be able to remove all the code dealing with the

3839b60014 cmd/{asm,compile,internal/obj}: add "maymorestack" support
This adds a debugging hook for optionally calling a "maymorestack"
function in the prologue of any function that might call morestack
(whether it does at run time or not). The maymorestack function will
let us improve lock checking and add debugging modes that stress
function preemption and stack growth.

appears to be broken)

1c4cfd8010 cmd/compile,cmd/internal/objabi: move -d flag parser to objabi
This moves and slightly generalizes the -d debug flag parser from
cmd/compile/internal/base to cmd/internal/objabi so that we can use
the same debug flag syntax in other tools.

This makes a few minor tweaks to implementation details. The flag
itself is now just a flag.Value that gets constructed explicitly,
rather than at init time, and we've cleaned up the implementation a
little (e.g., using a map instead of a linear search of a slice). The
help text is now automatically alphabetized. Rather than describing
the values of some flags in the help text footer, we simply include it
in the flags' help text and make sure multi-line help text renders
sensibly.

For #48297.

6113dacf32 cmd/compile: make -memprofilerate work
There are multiple things preventing the -memprofilerate flag from
working right now:

- CmdFlags.MemProfileRate has type int64, which is currently not
supported by the compiler's reflection-based registerFlags.
Unfortunately, rather than letting you know this, registerFlags
  simply ignores this field.

- Nothing consumes CmdFlags.MemProfileRate anyway. startProfile
instead uses a package-local memprofilerate variable that is never
  set to anything.

Fix this by making CmdFlags.MemProfileRate an int (that's what
runtime.MemProfileRate is anyway) and using it in startProfile. While
we're here, prevent similar flag parsing bugs in the future by making
registerFlags panic if it encounters a flag field of unsupported type.

The -asan option causes the compiler to add instrumentation for the

This CL also inserts asan instrumentation during SSA building.

This CL passes tests but is not usable by itself. The actual
implementation of asanread/asanwrite in the runtime package, and
support for -asan in the go tool and tests, will follow in subsequent
CLs.

804ecc2581 [dev.typeparams] all: add GOEXPERIMENT=unified knob
Setting `-gcflags=all=-d=unified` works for normal builds/tests, but
seems to have trouble with the test/run.go regress tests. So add a
GOEXPERIMENT knob to allow another way to turn on unified IR
construction, which plays better with all.bash.

While here, update two existing test expectations that currently fail
during GOEXPERIMENT=unified ./all.bash:

1. misc/cgo/errors/testdata/err2.go is testing column positions, and
types2 gets one case slightly better, and another case slightly
worse. For now, the test case is updated to accept both.

2. fixedbugs/issue42284.go is added to the list of known failures,
because it fails for unified IR. (It's an escape analysis test, and
escape analysis is working as expected; but unified is formatting an
imported constant value differently than the test's regexp expects.)

eaa1ddee84 all: explode GOEXPERIMENT=regabi into 5 sub-experiments
This separates GOEXPERIMENT=regabi into five sub-experiments:
regabiwrappers, regabig, regabireflect, regabidefer, and regabiargs.
Setting GOEXPERIMENT=regabi now implies the working subset of these
(currently, regabiwrappers, regabig, and regabireflect).

This simplifies testing, helps derisk the register ABI project,
and will also help with performance comparisons.

This replaces the -abiwrap flag to the compiler and linker with
the regabiwrappers experiment.

As part of this, regabiargs now enables registers for all calls
in the compiler. Previously, this was statically disabled in
regabiEnabledForAllCompilation, but now that we can control it
independently, this isn't necessary.

For #40724.

9a555fc24c cmd/compile: fix missing descend in Addrtaken for closures.
ComputeAddrtaken needs to descend into closures, now that imported

For now, still disable inlining of functions with closures for -G mode.
I'll enable it in a later change -- there are just a few fixes related

6e46c8fbb5 [dev.typeparams] all: merge dev.regabi (7e0a81d) into dev.typeparams
As with CL 285875, this required resolving some conflicts around
handling of //go:embed directives. Still further work is needed to
reject uses of //go:embed in files that don't import "embed", so this
is left as a TODO. (When this code was written for dev.typeparams, we
were still leaning towards not requiring the "embed" import.)

Also, the recent support for inlining closures (CL 283112) interacts
poorly with -G=3 mode. There are some known issues with this code
already (#43818), so for now this CL disables inlining of closures
when in -G=3 mode with a TODO to revisit this once closure inlining is
working fully.
